Treatment For Autism
There is no cure for autism just yet, even though a lot of research is underway. However, in the time being a lot of children are being diagnosed with the condition day in and out. As a matter of fact, it may shock you to learn that approximately 1 out of every 150 children in the United States has autism or suffers from some symptom that falls easily within the autistic disorder spectrum.
The statistics are bloodcurdling, and the prognosis for autistic patients is not much encouraging either. However, you are not without hope because several procedures have been developed over time to help you treat and manage the condition in your suffering child. Some are tested and trusted, and a few are still in the trial phase. But what’s to lose? After all, knowledge is power.
Some therapy and training approaches that are used in the treatment of autism in autistic patients include a certain behavioral modification system that includes immediate rewards for good behavior and immediate punishment for bad. The American psychologist Ivar Lovaas developed this to help shape the behavior of the autistic child. There is one catch that makes this treatment unacceptable to many Americans. This is the use of the electric shock to punish self-destructive behavior when the child is particularly bad. There really aren’t many fans of that technique.
